- Game: NFS Underground 2 Browser
- Verified version: Oct 31, 2026 update
- Verified date: November 1, 2026

To save in NFS Underground 2 Browser, press Esc (or Start on a controller), open Garage and choose Save. The start page adds three extras on top of that: Autosave, a profile backup you download and restore, and cloud saves that sit behind a passphrase you pick. We confirmed the menu path on the start page and the existence of each control on November 1, 2026. We did not create a profile in our play test, so we did not save, back up or restore anything, and we did not use cloud saves. Treat the notes below as the port's own description, not a tested procedure.

## How do you save in the game?

Press Esc or Start, go to Garage and choose Save. The start page's Saves tab spells it out as "To save while playing: Esc or Start > Garage > Save". We did not create a profile, so we could not test saving ourselves. The first thing the game asks after the intro is whether to create one. The [how to play guide](/wiki/nfs-underground-2/guides/how-to-play/) shows where that prompt comes up.

## What does Autosave do?

[Autosave](/wiki/nfs-underground-2/settings/#autosave) sets each profile's Save option to Autosave once. The switch sits on the Game tab and showed as On in our session. The start page adds that a later change in the game's own Options stays, so the switch does not keep overriding your choice. Like other Game tab settings, it applies the next time you press Play.

## How do profile backups work?

The Saves tab lists your profiles and has Download backup and Restore buttons. Without a profile it says "No profiles yet. Create one in the game." We know the controls exist but did not use them. The page does not say what the backup file contains or where it goes, so check the download yourself before you rely on it. A backup is a copy you control, which makes it a sensible companion to cloud saves. The [profile backup entry](/wiki/nfs-underground-2/settings/#profile-backup) in our settings table has the short version.

## How do cloud saves work?

Cloud saves store your saves on the port's server under a passphrase you choose. The Saves tab has an Enable cloud saving button and a Load button with the prompt "Enter your passphrase to load your saves." On another browser you enter the same passphrase and load. The changelog adds three details:

| Date | Change |
|---|---|
| October 26 | Your fifth Play asks whether to turn cloud saves on |
| October 27 | A lost upload no longer looks like a conflict |
| October 31 | Offered sooner; the browser can keep the passphrase with your passwords |

The [cloud saves entry](/wiki/nfs-underground-2/settings/#cloud-saves) summarizes the option. We do not know how the passphrase is stored on the server, so pick one you do not use elsewhere.

## What happens in a save conflict?

A real conflict shows both versions, asks you which to keep and keeps a copy. That is the October 27 changelog entry. It also fixed a case where a lost upload looked like a conflict when it was not. We did not trigger a conflict, so we cannot describe how the screen looks.

## What is a claimed name, and how does it tie to your passphrase?

A claimed name is a name only you can play under, tied to your cloud saves passphrase. The October 28 update added this, and the changelog says it also keeps your EA Messenger friends and blocks yours. A name has 3 to 15 letters, digits, - or _, and you set it at [Your name](/wiki/nfs-underground-2/settings/#your-name) under Online. Friends need a claimed name too, as the [friends entry](/wiki/nfs-underground-2/settings/#friends) notes. Since October 31 the name stays yours for as long as the passphrase does. Before that it lapsed 180 days after your last game. The [online free roam guide](/wiki/nfs-underground-2/guides/online-free-roam/) explains what the name does in free roam.

## What else is stored on your device?

Game data is stored separately from saves. The Other tab shows "Game data on this device" with a 1.7 GB preload button and Delete game data. Deleting that data is a different action from deleting a profile, though the page does not spell out the exact effect on saves, so back up first. The [troubleshooting guide](/wiki/nfs-underground-2/guides/not-working/) lists the other buttons on that tab.

The port shows both versions, asks which to keep and keeps a copy. The October 27 update also stopped a lost upload from looking like a conflict.
