# Hamburger Hill Airborne Drop: How to Open Your Parachute

> On a Hamburger Hill airborne drop you wait for the green light, walk out of the plane and press E when [E] Open Chute appears, or your soldier lands Killed in Action.

This wiki covers the Wesware game only. It is not about the 1987 war film, the 1969 Battle of Hamburger Hill, the board games of that name or Antagonistic: Hamburger Hill, and UBG76 is not the game's developer or official site.

On a Hamburger Hill airborne drop you start inside the transport plane, wait for the jump light to turn from red to green, walk out of the door and then press E when the screen shows "[E] Open Chute". If you do not press it, your soldier hits the ground and the screen reads "Killed in Action". That is exactly what happened to us on our first campaign drop on Riverbend in version 0.8.3, on November 2, 2026. This guide walks through the drop and the settings that use it.

## Where do airborne drops happen?

Airborne drops show up in both main modes. In the campaign, the very first choice offers "Drop on Riverbend" next to "Storm the Beaches", and the battle setup screen lists Airborne as one way in, next to On Foot, Beach, Heli and Boats. In [Quick Play](/wiki/hamburger-hill/modes/quick-play/), the Insertion setting has two airborne options, Airborne drop and Airborne invasion, and there is an Airborne Drop preset.

## What happens inside the plane?

You stand in a line of paratroopers, holding the static line, with a jumpmaster at the far end by the door. The cabin glows red at first. When the light turns green, the jumpmaster raises his arm. Hold W to walk forward along the line to the door, and you drop out into the dark.

| Step | What you see | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Red cabin light | Wait in line |
| 2 | Green cabin light, jumpmaster's arm raised | Hold W to walk to the door |
| 3 | You fall out of the plane | Look for the prompt |
| 4 | "[E] Open Chute" in the middle of the screen | Press E at once |

## Why did I die after jumping?

You did not open your chute. The prompt is small and appears in the middle of the screen while you fall, and on a night drop it is the only bright thing on screen. Press E, the Use key, as soon as it shows. On a gamepad, Use is held X. Our leader never opened his, and the next screen was "Killed in Action".

The battle does not end when the leader dies. The squad fights on, and the log keeps reporting what happens, such as illumination rounds and incoming artillery. After our leader fell, we pressed Enter and took over the machine gunner, already on the ground.

## Is the night drop harder?

It is darker, and in our drop the log soon reported incoming artillery. Our Riverbend drop was set at night, and the setup screen did not switch to Day when we clicked it. On the ground, the illumination rounds lit up the jungle enough to see enemy soldiers among the trees, but the drop itself showed almost nothing until the chute prompt.

## Is it worth surviving an insertion?

Yes, beyond keeping your men alive. The 0.8.0 update added badges with permanent stat bonuses for soldiers who survive different insertion missions. A lost drop also costs you: our failed Riverbend drop ended with 9 of 12 men stamped KIA and 60 Support lost, and every dead soldier has to be replaced with a paid recruit.

## How can I practice the drop?

Use Quick Play. Pick the Airborne Drop preset, or any map with Insertion set to Airborne drop, and set Time of day to Day for a clear view. Quick Play gave us a different squad from our campaign army. When the drop feels routine, take the campaign drop on Riverbend with E ready.
