What is Multiplayer in DirtBound?
Multiplayer is the DirtBound online mode: you create or join a lobby of 2 to 8 players, the host sets laps, stage length, collisions and camera, and the lobby votes on the next race.
Multiplayer is the one mode that needs an account before you start. Sign in with Google from the main menu, choose a username and the Multiplayer screen opens with two buttons, Create a lobby and Join with a code, above the list of public lobbies.
Public or private. A public lobby shows in the list and anyone can join it. A private lobby stays hidden and gives you a 5 character code to send to friends. Codes use letters and digits but skip look-alike characters such as 0, O, 1, I and L, so they are easy to read out. Lobby names can be up to 24 characters.
What the host sets. Only the host changes the settings:
| Setting | Range | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Laps (circuits and loops) | 1 to 10 | 3 |
| Stage length | 1 to 10 km, in 1 km steps | 3 km |
| Stage landscape | Varied, Lowlands, High mountains | Varied |
| Collisions between cars | On or off | Off |
| Camera | Isometric, Third person or Both | Isometric |
With the camera set to Both, every player can switch views with C during the race.
Picking the race. Players mark themselves Ready and the host starts a vote once at least 2 are ready. The ballot can include a random stage, a random circuit drawn from the official and community tracks, the official circuits and community circuits with their star counts. When the vote ends, everyone loads into the same race. The results screen shows places, and anyone who did not finish gets DNF.
Good to know. A lobby holds 8 players at most. If you join while a race is running, you wait and join the next one. A lobby that sits idle for 15 minutes is closed.
