How does Shadow Bolt hit?

Shadow Bolt is a Shadow bolt on one enemy up to 30 yards away, with a base interval of 1.4 seconds. It is the fastest Warlock spell, tied with Corruption. The Warlock starts on 165 base health, the lowest in the game, so a bolt that hits from range is a good fit.

Where does Shadow Bolt fit in the Warlock kit?

Every Warlock run starts with it, and two trees build on it. Destruction makes the bolt itself bigger and wider. Affliction links it to Corruption, so each bolt also leaves damage over time behind. Even a Demonology Doomguard throws Shadow Bolts that inherit your upgrades.

Which talents change Shadow Bolt?

Improved Shadow Bolt adds damage over five ranks, and Bane shortens the cooldowns of Shadow Bolt and Immolate. Shadow Cleave, the Destruction milestone at 10 points, makes every bolt that lands fork to two more enemies for part of the damage. Conflagrate, the Destruction milestone at 20 points, starts each run with Immolate and makes Shadow Bolt and Searing Pain blow up Immolated enemies for part of the hit within 6 yards.

On the Affliction side, Nightfall, the milestone at 10 points, makes each bolt that lands corrupt its target for part of the bolt over 12 seconds. Every tick of Corruption then has a 2% chance to fire a free Shadow Bolt, at most twice a second. A bonus line in the client also makes Shadow Bolt pierce to more enemies for 50% of its damage, with no source named.
