How does Fireball hit?

Fireball sends Fire damage at one enemy up to 30 yards away. Its base interval is 1.3 seconds, the fastest in the Mage pool. On its own it is a steady single-target bolt, and the Mage’s area damage comes from the rest of its 13-spell pool, the largest of any class.

Where does Fireball fit in the Mage kit?

Every Mage run opens with it unless a capstone swaps it out. Two of the three Mage capstones do exactly that: Arcane Power starts you with Arcane Missiles and Summon Water Elemental starts you with Frostbolt. Only a Fire Mage keeps Fireball as the opener, and the Fire tree pushes every Fire spell at once.

Which talents change Fireball?

Improved Fireball, the first Fire talent, shortens its cooldown over five ranks. Fireball is also a Fire spell, so the school talents apply. Impact gives Fire spells a chance to stun for 1 second, and Fire Power adds damage. Ignite, the Fire milestone at 10 points, burns the target after a Fire critical strike. Hot Streak, the milestone at 20 points, casts a free Pyroblast on every fourth Fire critical strike, and Fireball’s fast interval feeds that count quickly.

The client stores one more line for Fireball, “Fireball splits, striking more enemies for 60% of its damage,” but it does not name the card or item behind it. Because it is a Fire spell, Fireball also counts for the achievement You’re Fired, which asks you to defeat Edwin VanCleef in Elwynn Forest with Fire.
