How does Backstab hit?

Backstab is a Physical melee strike with a 7-yard reach, a stored target count of 2 and a base wait of 1.8 seconds. The client stores it with the same strike type as Execute and Eviscerate. That type’s tooltip promises double damage against an enemy below 30% health and aims at bosses and elites first, so Backstab most likely shares that behavior, though we have not confirmed it in play.

Where does Backstab fit in the Rogue kit?

Backstab is the Subtlety tree’s opener. It sits in the normal Rogue pool and can come up on level-up cards, but Shadow Dance makes it the spell every run starts with. It is a little slower than Sinister Strike, 1.8 seconds against 1, and it shares two talents with it.

Which talents change Backstab?

Opportunity, a row 1 Subtlety talent, adds damage over five ranks. Mutilate, the Assassination milestone at 20 points, makes Backstab and Sinister Strike strike again at once for 50% of the blow. Shadow Dance, the Subtlety capstone at 30 points, starts each run with Backstab in place of Sinister Strike , and it makes Backstab and Eviscerate splash part of their damage onto every enemy within 5 yards of their target. No other talent gives Backstab area damage.

One more line in the client, which the data does not tie to a source, gives Sinister Strike and Backstab a chance to strike twice and makes Adrenaline Rush last longer.
