# Are Unblocked Games Safe: The Risk Comes From the Site, Not the Game

> Unblocked games are ordinary HTML5 games that install nothing, so the real risks are fake downloads, login prompts and scam pop-ups on the site that hosts them.

Unblocked games are ordinary HTML5 browser games, and playing one is about as safe as opening any other web page. The danger usually comes from the site that hosts the game: fake download buttons, requests to sign in and pop-ups that claim your device is infected. Independent developers make these games and can update them at any time, so no game directory, UBG76 included, can promise that a game stays the same after it is checked.

## What does "unblocked" actually mean?

"Unblocked" is a label, not a technology. It describes small browser games that tend to load on networks that filter big gaming sites, mostly because they are small and light. Nothing inside the game is different from any other HTML5 game. It is the same kind of code that runs a web page.

The label also does not mean a site helped you get around anything. UBG76 is not a game developer, not the official site of any game it lists and not a proxy or VPN. If a site that calls itself "unblocked" asks you to install a proxy, an extension or a VPN to play, treat that as a warning sign rather than a feature.

## Can an unblocked game put a virus on your device?

A game that only runs in a browser tab does not install anything on your device, so the game itself is rarely the problem. Malware usually arrives in a file you agree to download or through a page that talks you into doing something. The Federal Trade Commission warns people not to download free games, movies or music from unfamiliar websites, and it notes that scammers "create fake security warnings" to push you into calling a phone number.

That is the pattern to watch for on game sites. A real browser game never needs a setup file, a codec or a "player update" to start. If your browser shows a red "Dangerous site" or "Dangerous download" warning, Google's Chrome help pages recommend that you don't visit the site. Keep your browser up to date too, since security fixes arrive through updates.

## What should you check before you press play?

Check three things: whether the page wants a download, whether it wants your details and where the game actually opens. The table below covers the signs we see most often on game sites.

| What you see | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A "Download" or "Install" button to play | Browser games need nothing installed | Close the page |
| A request for your email, password or phone number | No game on UBG76 needs an account | Do not type anything in |
| A pop-up that says your device is infected | A fake security warning | Close the tab and never call the number |
| A red browser warning before the page loads | The browser has flagged the site | Go back |
| The address bar shows a site you did not expect | You may be on a copy of another site | Check the address before you go further |

The last point matters because many unrelated sites use names close to "Unblocked Games 76." On UBG76, each game page tells you before you click whether the game plays on that page or opens somewhere else. [Wordle plays right on its own page](https://ubg76.uk/game/wordle/), with no new tab and no download. It is a fan-made Scratch recreation, not the official New York Times game, and its page says that at the top.

Other games open on the developer's own page. [Feed the AI opens on its developer's itch.io page](https://ubg76.uk/game/feedtheai/) in a new tab, because UBG76 does not embed it. The itch.io page offers a free browser demo and points to Steam for the full game. That is normal. A trustworthy site tells you where a game will open, and the place it sends you to is the developer's page or a known game portal.

## Can you get in trouble for playing unblocked games?

Yes, you can, if your school or workplace has a rule against playing games on its network or devices. The word "unblocked" does not change that rule. A game loading on a network only means the filter did not catch it, not that playing it is allowed.

UBG76 does not get around network rules and is not built to. Our advice is simple. Play where gaming is allowed, such as on your own device during your own time, and follow the policy of whoever runs the network you are on.

## How does UBG76 check the games it lists?

We play every game in a real browser before it gets a page, and we check the facts on that page against the developer's own page. We skip games that only exist as a download, clones of games we already list and games aimed at young children. You will not find fake download buttons, made-up ratings or claims that a game is official when we did not make it. The full process is in our [editorial policy](https://ubg76.uk/editorial-policy/), and our [privacy policy](https://ubg76.uk/privacy/) covers our cookieless analytics and the ad cookies Google uses.

We are also open about where a game comes from, even when the answer is a little messy. [Hill Race, a hill climb driving game](https://ubg76.uk/game/hillrace/), is a Scratch remix shared by devonpatterson2024 in December 2017. It builds on griffpatch's Hill Climb Racing v1.0 from 2015, and griffpatch's project notes say its graphics come from Fingersoft's Hill Climb Racing. The Hill Race page plays a packaged copy of the Scratch project, credits the author, links to the original and states the license. The [racing category](https://ubg76.uk/tags/racing/) lists the other driving games we have checked the same way.

Some limits stay with us no matter how careful we are:

- Some games open on another site, such as the developer's page or a game portal, and that site has its own ads and rules.
- A few on-page games load in a frame from a third-party platform, so ads inside that frame are outside our control.
- Developers can update or remove a game at any time.

If you ever see a download prompt, a login request or a strange pop-up on a game you found through UBG76, email [hello@ubg76.uk](mailto:hello@ubg76.uk) with the game name and what you saw. We recheck a game when a reader reports a problem. If a game simply will not start, our guide on [why a browser game is not loading](https://ubg76.uk/blog/browser-game-not-loading/) walks through the usual fixes, and the [UBG76 FAQ](https://ubg76.uk/faq/) answers common questions about downloads, phones and school networks.
